What Does the High Voltage EV Battery Do?

This is the big one: the lithium-ion pack that actually drives the wheels. Depending on the vehicle, it runs anywhere from a few hundred volts up to 800V or more on newer platforms, built from dozens or hundreds of individual cells grouped into modules.

Given the voltages involved, it’s constantly supervised by its Battery Management System, which tracks the charge and health of every cell, balances them against each other, and controls the contactors linking the pack to the rest of the car, including the inverter that drives the motor and the charger that refills it.

Like any battery, it loses capacity gradually over thousands of cycles. But that degradation isn’t always spread evenly, often it’s just one or two weak modules dragging the whole pack down. That’s why a lot of repairs don’t need a full replacement pack at all: swapping the faulty module can bring the battery back to a usable capacity at a fraction of the cost.

How do I know if my high voltage battery needs replacing?

Watch for a drop in range, a battery warning light, the car refusing to go into Ready mode, or a fault code pointing to a specific cell or module.

Can I just replace one module instead of the whole battery pack?

Often, yes. If diagnosis shows the fault is isolated to one or two modules, replacing just those can restore the pack’s balance and capacity, usually at a much lower cost than a full pack. Whether it’s an option depends on how the fault is spread across the pack, so proper diagnosis first is essential.

Can I replace a high voltage battery or module myself?

No. These packs carry voltages that can seriously injure or kill. This is a job for a technician with proper HV training, insulated tools, and PPE.

What’s the real difference between refurbished and new?

A refurbished pack has usually been tested cell by cell, with the weak ones swapped out, then rebuilt and checked against capacity and safety standards, often at a noticeably lower price than new OEM.
