What Does the Inverter Do?

The inverter, also called the traction inverter or motor controller, is what turns stored battery energy into motion. The high voltage battery stores its energy as direct current (DC), but the electric motor needs alternating current (AC) to turn. So the inverter’s job is to convert that DC into a precisely controlled, variable-frequency AC signal, thousands of times per second, using high-speed power switches.

By varying the frequency and voltage of that AC output, the inverter directly controls how fast the motor spins and how much torque it produces. That’s why it has such a direct effect on how an EV or hybrid actually feels to drive: acceleration, responsiveness and smoothness all come down to it.

It also works in reverse during regenerative braking, converting the motor’s mechanical energy back into DC to recharge the battery, and it handles several protective functions like voltage boosting and switch protection to keep the high voltage system safe.
